In today’s food blog writing post, I will be discussing the importance of authenticity as a blogger.
In my last post, I talked about the need to establish a connection with your readers and standing out through your voice. Your writing should trigger an emotional response from your readers, such as joy, excitement, nostalgia, laughter, etc. You want them to feel something, whatever that something may be. But here’s the deal…the connection must be an authentic one. If you try to mimic someone else, your readers will notice!
When you find your unique writing voice, you’ll attract the audience you are looking for. Your blog is just that…your blog. So, keep it that way. Your posts are about your recipes and your experiences, not someone else’s. Readers aren’t looking for a carbon copy of another blogger.
Think about it this way…
You wouldn’t go to Chipotle for authentic Mexican food or Olive Garden for authentic Italian fare. Now, you might be thinking, “But, I like eating at Chipotle!”
Great! Enjoy that burrito! But know that it’s not authentic. The food at restaurants such as these is meant to be replicated at every location so that you always have the same experience. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be the same as anybody else. I want to be me. And you should be you.
Here’s another example…
If you’ve ever watched a singing or dancing competition television show, you’re familiar with that one piece of advice the judges never fail to give…be authentic. Whether they are telling the contestants to sing from the heart, connect with the audience, tap into their emotions, the common denominator is authenticity.
What it boils down to is being yourself. We tell our kids, “be yourself,” all the time. As bloggers, we should take some of our own advice. And I know at first, it might be scary to open up and let your personality shine through. In fact, I was guilty of not doing this myself when I first started blogging. I asked all of my friends and family members to check out my new blog and let me know what they thought. I remember my best friend saying, “The writing is good, but it just doesn’t sound like you.”
I think I was in denial. “What is she talking about? Of course it’s me!” I thought.
But the truth was that she called me out for being unauthentic. The problem was that I was writing the way I was trained to write as a journalist – concise, straight-forward and unbiased. My blog posts not only lacked that human connection, but they also lacked me. Once I started incorporating my personality and my own voice into my posts, my blog became so much better for it.
You’re writing a blog post, not a report! Have fun and let you shine through. Your readers are humans, not robots. If you connect with them, they will come back and more importantly, keep coming back, post after post. But don’t forget, if you’re not authentic, they’ll just move on to another blog. And if you think authentic writing is hard, keep in mind that it’s even harder to try and write like somebody else.
