Make Parmesan Truffle Fries in Three Easy Methods
There are two main types of people, the ones who love truffle on anything and everything, and the others who can't stand it. So if you are in the first camp, read on, because this recipe will be your next go to side dish for whenever you are craving french fries.
And well, if you are in the second camp, give my air fryer steak fries or air fryer home fries a try!
This recipe can be made in the air fryer, oven or deep fryer. If you are craving a healthier alternative to French fries, I recommend you give the air fryer version a try as they require much less oil and but still crispy and delicious.
All you need are a handful of ingredients to make these parmesan truffle fries, and they are the perfect side dish to impress your guests or indulge all by yourself.
Ingredients Needed and Substitutions
Here are the basic ingredients you will need to make your parmesan truffle French fries.
See recipe notes for a full list of ingredients and measurements and substitutions.
1. Potatoes: I recommend using russet potatoes. I like to leave the skin on for extra texture or crispiness.
2. Truffle Oil: Truffle Oil comes in two varieties: Black truffle oil and white truffle oil. Either variety works, but just know that black truffle has a slightly stronger undertone compared to the white truffle oil.
3. Seasoning: I use truffle seasoning like this epicurean speciality brand, which is a mix of truffle salt, parmesan cheese, garlic, onion and lemon powder. If you don't have truffle seasoning, you can make your own, but at the minimum, you will need truffle salt to season your fries.
4. Parmesan Cheese (optional): Freshly grated parmesan cheese to garnish over your French fries.
How to Make Parmesan Truffle Fries
Before you make your fries, wash and scrub your potatoes thoroughly. Leave the skins on for extra texture and nutrients. Cut each potato lengthwise into thick wedges, about ½-inch to ¾-inch thick.
Soak the wedges into cold water for 3-5 minutes to release some of the starch. Gently pat dry before cooking them.
Air Fryer Method
Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, toss the potato wedges with truffle oil until they are evenly coated. Add in your seasoning and toss until the potatoes are well coated.
Step 2: Pre-heat your Air Fryer for 400°F (200°C) for 2-3 minutes. Air fry for 18-22 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time to ensure even cooking. Add an additional 2-3 minutes until you get the desired crispiness you want.
Garnish with parmesan cheese once cooked. Allow to cool for a few minutes before enjoying with your favorite dip!
Conventional Oven Method
Step 1: Same as the air fryer method, season your potato wedges in a large bowl by tossing in the truffle oil and seasoning mix with potatoes until well coated.
Step 3: Pre-heat your oven for 425°F (215°C). Bake the fries for 30-35 minutes. Use a spatula to flip the fries at the halfway mark so they cook evenly across.
Deep Fryer Method
Step 1: Preheat the oil to 350° and prepare a wire rack lined with paper towels.
Step 2: Fry the potatoes (with no seasoning) for approximately 5 minutes. Fry in batches and place them onto the paper towel to soak up the excess oil.
Step 3: Season your potatoes after frying them and toss the fries so the seasoning is well coated across the fries.
Tips for Best Results
- Whether you are air frying, baking or deep frying, don't crowd the basket. Bake in batches if you are making a large quantity.
- Don't skip on the truffle oil and truffle salt. These two main ingredients are essential to making the truffle fries. You can also sub the truffle salt with a pre-salted truffle seasoning that includes truffle salt along with other seasonings such as garlic and onion powders.
Make these Parmesan Truffle Fries Vegan
This recipe is naturally gluten free. Skip the cheese if you want to make these fries vegan. But if you want to have a parmesan like taste, here are some tips to make these parmesan truffle fries vegan friendly:
- Add Nutritional Yeast: Provides a cheesy, nutty flavor. Mix it with a little garlic powder and salt for added depth.
- Use Vegan Parmesan: Store-bought brands like Violife, or homemade vegan parmesan cheese like mine (a great nut free alternative!) uses pumpkin seeds and is perfect for sprinkling on truffle fries.
