Comparing Zucchini Fries vs. Traditional Potato Fries

Zucchini (or squash) is healthier alternative to potatoes given its high nutrient profile, antioxidants and low glycemic index score. Plus they are so versatile in cooking - you can use them to make any meal from breakfast casserole, air fryer squash snacks, butternut squash soup. Check out these 25 vegan recipe ideas for zucchini that have you covered from breakfast to dessert.

Zucchini fries are slightly healthier alternative to Traditional Potato Fries. Zucchini fries are light and crispy and have mild slightly sweet flavor compared to traditional potato fries. Because they are mild in taste, they mix very well with other ingredients and absorb flavors well.

Traditional fries can sometimes feel heavier, especially when you load them with toppings such as cheese and tend to become a whole meal because they are carb rich.

    Ingredients For This Recipe

All you need is a bag of frozen zucchini fries (or veggie fries) and an air fryer.

unopened packet of green giant veggie fries

Optional: You can use olive oil or butter to coat the fries before loading them into the air fryer.

You can also garnish these fries once they are done. Garnish with Parmesan cheese and any dipping sauce you prefer. Check out our 5 minute maple mustard sauce that can pairs really well with this snack dish.

How to Air Fry Frozen Zucchini Fries

The first thing you want to do is preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees.

While it's on preheat, cut open your zucchini fries (or veggie fries), and lightly coat them with butter or olive oil. If you want an extra crunch, you can coat the sticks a bit more generously with butter.

Once the air fryer is preheated, place the veggie fries in the air fryer as evenly as possible across the basket. This allows the fries to cook evenly across.

Set the air fryer timer to 10 minutes. You can check in at around 5-6 minute mark and give the fries a good shake half way through. This will just help spread the heat and cooks more evenly across the fries.

Once done, allow them to cool for 2-3 minutes before serving.

And that's it for this easy recipe! Serve and enjoy! Sprinkle freshly grated Parmesan cheese over the hot zucchini fries for an extra burst of flavor.

    Cooking Tips

    • For crispier fries, spray or coat the fries with butter or olive oil. You can also add an additional minute to the air fryer time to get them more crispy.
    • Don't crowd your basket. Spread your fries as evenly with very little overlap if possible. This will help the fries to cook more evenly across the basket. Nobody wants unevenly cooked fries!
    • If you are making larger quantities, cook them in separate batches. Reduce 1 minute for every consecutive batch you make.

    Equipment

I used the Gourmia Air Fryer Oven for this recipe which has a lot of great preset options

    Gluten Free Frozen Zucchini Fries

The Green Giant brand that is featured in this recipe is not gluten free. Dr. Pragers offers a great alternative if you are in search for a gluten free option. They are also dairy free as an added bonus. However, they do have soy in their products.

If using Dr. Preager's, cook them at 390 degrees (after pre-heating) for 10 minutes. Give them a good shake around the 5-6 minute mark so the fries are crisp all around.

Storing and Reheating Air Fried Zucchini Fries

Store in an air tight container for another 24-48 hours. After that, they will start to lose taste and freshness.

To reheat the fries, reheat them in the oven at 375 degrees for 4-5 minutes until you reach your desired warmth and crispiness.
